Local Artist Commissioned to Replicate “The Parasol” in Grand Scale; Boston Residents and Visitors Invited to Grab a Paint Brush, Add Some Color, and Leave Their Marks in Celebration of Santander’s Sponsorship of Goya Retrospective Exhibition at the MFA

Who:

Santander Bank N.A., through Fundación Banco Santander in Madrid, the lead sponsor of the Francisco Goya retrospective, “Goya: Order & Disorder,” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) presents a large scale, interactive “Paint-By-Goya” community mural project that brings Goya to the masses and allows Bostonians and visitors to leave their brush mark on a modern interpretation of a famed work of art. The mural will serve as a local link to the only showcasing of this comprehensive collection of Goya’s masterpieces ever gathered on such a large scale.

What:

An 8-foot by 12-foot canvas replica of the Spanish master’s classic, “The Parasol,” (from the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid) created by Somerville artist James Weinberg will be on display in Boston’s Copley Square. Boston residents and visitors are invited to contribute to the signature piece by following a numerical color key and adding the corresponding color to the mural to help complete this community work of art. The community “Paint-By-Goya” mural is inspired by the 170 paintings, prints, and drawings of Goya’s work that are included in the exhibition “Goya: Order and Disorder” on view at the MFA now through January 19, 2015.

When:

Saturday, October 18th and Sunday, October 19th
Recommended media attendance: 11am – 3pm

Where:

Copley Square (between Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library)
560 Boylston St, Boston, MA 02116

Why:

“We designed the mural project to draw attention to the arts and give the public the experience of viewing and painting one of Goya’s masterpieces,” said Peter R. Greiff, Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs at Santander.  “This project brings the community together to create and appreciate art and is one of the many ways in which we show our commitment to Boston and New England.”
