Boston, MA (October 4, 2017) – Building off the wildly popular 2015 Fenway match, Fenway Sports Management (FSM) announced that the AIG Fenway Hurling Classic and Irish Festival will debut a new three-game tournament championship format when hurling returns to Fenway Park on Sunday, November 19. Previously a doubleheader, the tournament will now feature four of the most prominent teams in the world vying for a championship trophy at one of the most iconic sports venues in the world. Tickets for the AIG Fenway Hurling Classic and Irish Festival, which include all three games of the tournament, are available at www.redsox.com/hurling.

FSM, in partnership with American International Group (AIG), the Gaelic Players Association (GPA), and the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), will bring ‘Ireland’s Ancient Warrior Sport’ back to Fenway for the second time in three years after a 61-year absence dating back to 1954. The AIG Fenway Hurling Classic and Irish Festival will feature the very best and most competitive Hurling rivals from Ireland beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET as 2017 League and All-Ireland Champions Galway and Dublin square off in a highly-anticipated rematch of their 2015 battle, while Tipperary will take the pitch versus Clare in the other preliminary match up. The winners of the two preliminary games will face-off in the championship match to determine the tournament winner at 3:00 p.m. ET.

“The strong demand and positive response to the inaugural AIG Fenway Hurling Classic in 2015 prompted us to make this year’s event even bigger and better,” said Fenway Sports Management Managing Director Mark Lev. “The game’s exciting combination of speed, skill, constant action and scoring has really resonated with fans. We’re excited to announce the addition of a third match and the introduction of the new tournament format, which will result in one team hoisting our inaugural trophy. This will be a can’t-miss day on the New England sports calendar and we’re grateful to partners AIG, the GPA and GAA for enabling us to add yet another dynamic event to an already compelling off-season line-up at Fenway Park.”

Hurling, widely believed to be the world’s oldest field game, combines agility, strength and intensity, earning it the reputation as the “fastest game on grass” among its loyal and passionate followers. Title sponsor AIG has been an official sponsor to Dublin GAA since November 2013 and has been committed to raising the profile of hurling and other Gaelic Games to a broader global audience.

“Along with the championship trophy, there will be an intense Irish pride for counties competing in the final match,” said GPA Chief Executive Officer Dermot Earley. “The new tournament format is going to bring the best out of four brilliant teams. It will be an unforgettable day for fans, players and the sport of hurling as a whole.”

In addition to the Hurling Classic, AIG and FSM have teamed up to offer attendees a lively Irish festival complete with Irish food, music and dancing. Additional details about the Irish Festival will be continuously posted at the event website. Furthermore, Aer Lingus has signed on as the Official Airline of the AIG Fenway Hurling Classic and Irish Festival and will transport the four teams from Ireland to Boston as well as presenting the stream of the doubleheader in November. Football Makes Its Triumphant Return to Fenway Park This November in The Fenway Gridiron Series Presented By Your Call Football

Fenway Park may be known for baseball as the home of the Boston Red Sox, but football has a long history at the ballpark dating back to its opening in 1912. Fenway Park went nearly a half century without the diamond being transformed to the gridiron, but that changed in 2015 when Notre Dame played Boston College and local high schools took the field for their traditional Thanksgiving Day football games. The University of Connecticut will host Boston College on Saturday, November 18. On Friday, November 10, Brown University hosts Dartmouth College in a matchup between two New England Ivy League schools. The following day, Saturday, November 11, the University of Massachusetts will host the University of Maine.

“Fenway Park is an iconic New England landmark and we are excited about the unique opportunity to play a football game there,” said Brown University Director of Athletics Jack Hayes. “It will be an unforgettable experience for our team members, alumni, and fans.”

Playing football at Fenway Park will have special meaning for each of the schools and their fan bases. This will be the first football game at Fenway Park for UConn, UMass and Maine, while Dartmouth and Brown have each taken the gridiron at Fenway twice before. Boston College leads the group of schools competing, as this November will be the 77th football game at Fenway for the Eagles.

“The historic prestige and legendary status of Fenway Park make this such a special and unique opportunity for the University of Maine and one we are excited to share with our student-athletes, staff, fans and alumni,” said UMaine Athletic Director Karlton Creech.

Newton-based Your Call Football will serve as the presenting sponsor of the Fenway Gridiron Series. The interactive technology company will be demonstrating its soon-to-be-launched game and app which will offer gamers and football fans the chance to control a live sporting event and compete on their play-calling skills.

Fenway Sports Management Announces the Return of Hurling at Fenway Park with the 2017 AIG Fenway Hurling Classic and Irish Festival

Following a successful event in 2015, the world’s fastest field sport returns to
Fenway Park for the second time in three years with a doubleheader on November 19

Boston, MA – Fenway Sports Management (FSM), American International Group (AIG), the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) announced that the sport of hurling will return to Fenway Park with a doubleheader in the AIG Fenway Hurling Classic and Irish Festival on Sunday, November 19, 2017. Hurling, believed to be the world’s oldest field game, combines agility, strength and intensity to make it one of the fastest paced games played.

“Nearly 28,000 fans packed Fenway Park when hurling returned to the ballpark for the first time in 61 years in 2015 and we’re thrilled to have the fastest game on grass back for two matches this November,” said Mark Lev, Managing Director of Fenway Sports Management. “We are fortunate to have great partners in AIG, the GPA, the GAA, Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the City of Boston to help bring this exhilarating sport back to Fenway. FSM is proud to play host to one of Ireland’s most traditional sports and further our commitment to bringing unique events to Boston.”

One of Ireland’s native Gaelic Games, hurling shares a number of similarities to Gaelic football, such as the field and goals. Hurlers use a wooden stick called a hurley to hit a small ball called a sliotar (pronounced slitter) between the opponents’ goalposts either over the crossbar or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper. Similar to 2015, teams will play a modified version of hurling called “Super 11’s,” which reduces the pitch to 11 players and the only way to score is under the crossbar into the net.

“After an immensely successful event in 2015, we are delighted that hurling is coming back to Boston and Fenway Park,” said GPA Chief Executive Officer Dermot Earley. “Playing our games in iconic sports venues like Fenway Park further promotes the growth and interest of our games in the US and worldwide. Our players are looking forward to a great doubleheader on the famous turf at Fenway this November.”

AIG has been an official sponsor to the Dublin GAA since November 2013 and has been committed to raising the profile of hurling and other Gaelic Games to a broader global audience.

“Hurling continues to grow in popularity and events like the AIG Fenway Hurling Classic and Irish Festival help continue to grow the sport’s profile globally,” said Tom Allen, Managing Director, Boston Region, AIG. “We are excited to once again bring hurling back to this iconic venue for the game’s fans and introduce the game to a broader audience in the United States.”

Additional details about the 2017 AIG Fenway Hurling Classic and Irish Festival, including ticket information, will be made available at www.redsox.com/hurling.
