Snow is in the air at Killington Resort

Mother Nature gets a boost from expert snowmaking and grooming techniques ahead of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Nov. 24-26

KILLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont’s Killington Resort, the largest ski and snowboard resort in Eastern North America and part of the POWDR adventure lifestyle company, has begun snowmaking in advance of the 2017 Audi FIS Ski World Cup on November 24-26, 2017. Killington Resort was the first North American ski mountain to open its season to the general public in 2016 and last to close in 2017 for Eastern North America, in part because of the resort’s advanced snowmaking and grooming prowess.

Killington typically begins the longest season in the East with exclusive access for season pass holders, rewarding commitment to the resort with the first turns of the winter. Season Passes and Express Cards are still available to purchase for the 2017/18 season. While there is no confirmed window for Opening Day at this time, snowmaking lit up on Killington and Skye Peaks just before 11:00 p.m. Monday for testing prior to the season and the approaching Audi Ski World Cup races.

Killington has dedicated a snowmaking team to specifically build the race venue on Superstar where the women’s slalom and giant slalom races will take place. Killington’s powerful snowmaking system has the ability to pump more than 720,000 gallons of water into 240 snow guns, covering 80 acres with 12 inches of fresh snow in a matter of hours. Killington’s snowmaking capacity and grooming allow the mountain to maintain a dependable and consistent snow surface regardless of weather conditions.

“When it comes to snowmaking and grooming, we have the best team and tools in the industry to prepare Killington for the winter season and World Cup on Thanksgiving weekend,” said Mike Solimano, President and General Manager of Killington Resort. “Last year, we were able to put on a spectacular World Cup weekend and operate our lifts for more than 200 days before closing on June 1 because of our snowmaking team. Our snowmakers are ready to work with Mother Nature for another monumental World Cup and winter season.”

The general public is invited to view the women’s giant slalom and slalom races from free general admission areas or from the grandstands as a limited number of premium grandstand tickets remain available when Killington hosts the Alpine World Cup event for the second year in a row. The free viewing areas will accommodate approximately 12,000 spectators and Killington will provide free parking and an enhanced shuttle system for event spectators during the weekend. Appropriate attire for winter weather is recommended for the outdoor venue, including sturdy waterproof shoes and multiple layers. No pets, lawn chairs or coolers will be permitted in the Expo Village. In addition, Dispatch will headline a robust music and entertainment lineup for World Cup spectators.

USSA Proposes World Cup Ski Racing’s Return to Killington

Two-Year Deal Poised to Make Thanksgiving Weekend Ski Racing a New Vermont Tradition

Killington, VT – The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), along with its resort partner POWDR, is proposing a two-year agreement for Vermont’s Killington Resort to again host the Audi FIS Ski World Cup. After years of work by the USSA to find an opportunity to bring World Cup ski racing to the most populated region of the country, Killington hosted an expectation-shattering inaugural World Cup Weekend during November 2016 that drew an estimated 30,000 spectators, and New England’s largest resort hopes to carry that momentum into future events.

Killington plans to enter a two-year race agreement with USSA to bring World Cup racing back to Vermont in 2017 and 2018, and Killington’s place on next year’s World Cup calendar is expected be confirmed during meetings of the International Ski Federation (FIS) in Portoroz, Slovenia in late May. Pending FIS approval, the next World Cup at Killington would take place November 25-26, 2017, Thanksgiving Weekend.

The proposed November, 2017 World Cup would include women’s giant slalom and slalom races, attracting athletes such as U.S. Ski Team superstars Julia Mancuso and Mikaela Shiffrin.

As with last year’s FIS World Cup, the proposed 2017 and 2018 World Cup races at Killington would be broadcast worldwide to over 60 nations, along with national broadcast coverage across the US. The event is anticipated to bring millions of dollars in economic impact to the state of Vermont.

“Establishing a multi-year World Cup schedule here at Killington is an incredible opportunity to bring even more visibility to the resort and our community, which has been extremely supportive of our efforts to bring these races back. I was blown away by the sheer size of the crowd last year, and the enthusiasm I witnessed leads me to believe that we’ll bring in even more spectators this year to watch the fastest female ski races in the world take on the Superstar trail,” says Mike Solimano, president and general manager of Killington Resort and Pico Mountain. “We used every cold period in October and November to build a world-class race venue on Superstar, and getting the job done so early in the season showcased our snowmaking system as an industry-leading powerhouse.”

Last November’s races in Killington marked the first World Cup in the eastern US since 1991 when the U.S. Ski Team’s Julie Parisien won the giant slalom at Waterville Valley, NH.

The USSA has had a long relationship with POWDR producing World Cup and Grand Prix events at Copper Mountain and Park City Mountain Resort, and the collaboration for Killington’s World Cup in 2016 solidified The Beast of the East as a strong venue for World Cup alpine ski racing in addition to the regularly hosted FIS Cup and USSA races.

“Last year we accomplished all of our goals, which were to promote eastern skiing and Killington to the global audience. It was very powerful to see the local and regional communities come together to support World Cup racing,” says Herwig Demschar, chair of Killington’s World Cup Local Organizing Committee and VP of International Business Development at POWDR. “We have a blueprint for successful races to build on, and we are going to throw a party you don’t want to miss,” adds Demschar.

“We are going to throw a party you don’t want to miss.”- Herwig Demschar, Local Organizing Committee chair.

“We would be thrilled to work together with the Killington community, USSA and the amazing athletes to host another World Cup and make it even bigger and better than before,” says John Cumming, founder and CEO of POWDR. “Killington is a special place, and to again have the excitement and energy of World Cup ski racing return to the East, to the beautiful
mountains of Vermont, is an experience we would enthusiastically embrace and look forward to sharing with the world. As proven by last year’s World Cup, the Killington team is one of the best in the business and up for the challenge.”

Highlights

  • The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, and its resort partner Powdr, are submitting a two-year bid to the International Ski Federation (FIS) for the Audi FIS Ski World Cup to return to Killington, VT in November, 2017 and 2018.
  • 2016’s Audi FIS Ski World Cup at Killington was the first World Cup in the eastern USA since 1991 at Waterville Valley, NH and the first in Vermont since 1978 at Stratton Mountain. \
