Terry Lyons joined Elevate Communications in 2008 after a 26-year career at the NBA’s league office in New York. Lyons was an integral part of the league’s growth from a small organization with 28 employees to a powerful company of nearly 1,000 with offices worldwide. He began his career in sports management as an NBA public relations intern while still a college student at St. John’s University, from which he graduated with a degree in Athletic Administration/Sports Management,
and moved up through the communications department ultimately to serve as Vice President, International Communications. From 1993 to 2007, Lyons oversaw the league’s global communications group including, public relations and media relations activities all over the world. Lyons supervised communications staff located at the NBA’s regional offices, which through the years included those in Australia, Canada, China, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan and Latin America.
From 1990 until 2007, Lyons worked with USA Basketball to formulate communications plans and activities for teams competing in four Olympic Games and World Championships of Basketball. He also served as a liaison to the United States Olympic Committee and to FIBA, the international basketball federation.
During his tenure with the NBA, Lyons gained expertise in a wide range of communications functions, from marketing to television production, and he assisted the league in the launch of nba.com, the WNBA, NBA TV and the NBA D-League. He managed broadcast/pr relationships with ABC/ESPN, NBC Sports, CBS, CNN and Turner Sports, as well as the many sports directors and commentators for the league’s global television partners. Lyons is particularly proud of the league’s accomplishments with many community service initiatives over the years, including Don’t Foul Out, Stay in School, NBA Cares, Basketball without Borders and USA Basketball’s Hoops for Troops program.
