Killington Resort Opens for the Season Friday, October 19, 2018

The Longest Season in the East Starts This Week as Killington Resort Prepares for the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Races

Vermont’s Killington Resort, the largest ski and snowboard destination in Eastern North America, and part of POWDR, is scheduled to kick off its 2018-19 winter season at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 19, 2018, becoming the first Eastern resort to open for skiing and snowboarding.

The first turns of the season, on Friday, October 19, will be reserved exclusively for Season Pass, Express Card, Beast365 and Ikon Pass holders. The resort will open to the general public on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Killington’s operating schedule for the remainder of the week will be updated in real time at www.killington.com/conditions.

“Mother Nature played her role, giving us cool temps, but this summer’s snowmaking enhancements as a part of our $25 million dollar capital investment really gave us a leg up,” says Mike Solimano, president and general manager of Killington Resort and Pico Mountain. “Killington is on track to, once again, be the first ski area in the East to open and, for the third winter in a row, get the resort ready for the World Cup races in just a few weeks.”

On Friday, October 19, 2018, the K-1 Express Gondola will provide uploading and downloading to open terrain for skiers and snowboarders from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and the North Ridge Triple lift will allow uploading until 3:45 p.m. Skiers and snowboarders will use the Peak Walkway to access open terrain and return to the K-1 Express Gondola for the trip down to the base area when finished for the day. Skiing and snowboarding will be on advanced terrain only, providing roughly 600 vertical feet of open trails. No beginner terrain is available at this time. Early season conditions exist and snowmaking and other on-mountain operations may be in progress throughout the day on open terrain.

The Snowshed Sales Center will be open Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. and Friday starting at 7:00 a.m., for RFID pass pick up and pass purchases. K-1 Guest Services will be open starting at 7:00 a.m. on Friday selling Season Passes and Express Cards for same-day access to the slopes. Express Card holders will only be charged $25 for all ages on Opening Day, and children ages 6 and under will receive a Kids Ski Free ticket if accompanied by a season pass holder. No other passes, tickets, vouchers or reciprocal discounts will be accepted on this day. Beginning Saturday, daily lift tickets will be $59 for adults (ages 19-64), $45 for youth (ages 7-18) and $50 for seniors (ages 65-79). Express Card holders will receive 50% off lift ticket window rate for midweek, and 25% off weekend rates.

Remaining a longstanding tradition, season Pass holders are invited to enjoy free lunch on Friday at the K-1 Café, North Ridge Dog Sled or Peak Lodge as a show of gratitude for their commitment to Killington Resort.

Beginning on Saturday, October 20, 2018, K-1 Express Gondola lift hours will be 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for uphill loading. The North Ridge Triple lift will allow uploading until 3:45 p.m.

During the World Cup races, which will take place on November 23-25, public access to the Expo Village, which is adjacent to the finish area and is free entrance for spectator viewing, will offer unparalleled access to watch the fastest female alpine ski racers in the world compete in slalom and giant slalom events. Additional World Cup events include free concerts by Paul Oakenfold, Michael Franti, KT Tunstall and Guster, plus movie premiers, fireworks, parades and more. A full schedule of the Killington Cup events can be found at killington.com/worldcup.

Killington will remain open to the public for skiing and snowboarding as conditions permit. Skiers and riders can prepare for Opening Day by purchasing Season Passes and Express Cards now at killington.com and 1-800-621-MTNS (6867).

High School Football Returns to Fenway Park for Thanksgiving Rivalries in the Fenway Gridiron Series Presented by Your Call Football

Four local high school football teams will play their traditional Thanksgiving rivalry games in a doubleheader at Fenway Park on Wednesday, November 22

BOSTON, MA  Fenway Sports Management (FSM) announced the addition of high school football to the schedule of games played in the Fenway Gridiron Series presented by Your Call Football. A doubleheader featuring four local high school football teams, Masconomet vs. Everett and Hingham vs. Scituate, will take place on Thanksgiving Eve, November 22, at Fenway Park. Tickets are currently on sale at redsox.com/gridiron and start at $20 with 25% of every ticket sold given back to the school each patron is supporting.

The high school contests join three New England Division I college football games to be played in the Fenway Gridiron Series presented by Your Call Football. The November 22 doubleheader will feature a pair of rivalries spanning north and south of Boston:

  • Masconomet vs. Everett at 5:00 p.m. – This will be the second year that Everett has played Masconomet in a Thanksgiving game. Last year when the two teams met, Everett topped Masco by a score of 35-24 in route to a Division I Super Bowl state championship.
  • Hingham vs. Scituate at 7:45 p.m. – A Thanksgiving rivalry of South Shore schools dating back to 1994, Scituate has won the last 3 years.  Both Patriot League teams are currently 5-1 this season and will be heading to the MIAA playoffs.

High school football games were commonly played at Fenway Park in the early 20th Century. The ballpark also hosted the 1912 high school national championship game when Everett was defeated by Oak Park, IL. High school football wasn’t played at Fenway again until 1935, when a series of games were held featuring high schools from around Boston. After an 80-year absence, high school Football returned to Fenway Park in 2015 with four Thanksgiving rivalry games.

Along with the high school games, the Fenway Gridiron Series presented by Your Call Football will feature marquee matchups of New England’s premier college football programs. On Friday, November 10, Brown University hosts Dartmouth College in a matchup between two New England Ivy League schools. The following day, Saturday, November 11, the University of Massachusetts will host the University of Maine. In the third college football game, the University of Connecticut will host Boston College on Saturday, November 18.

The Boston Globe Launches First Season of Opinion Reel

Opinion Reel is a new short documentary film program hosted by Globe Opinion, showcasing locally-produced films with a strong point of view. Each week this fall, over a nine-week season, Opinion Reel will highlight one film and its filmmaker.

Boston, MA – The Boston Globe announced today the inaugural season of Opinion Reel: a new program, hosted by Globe Opinion, that showcases locally produced short documentaries that express a distinct point of view. The Fall 2015 Opinion Reel lineup is available today at www.bostonglobe.com/OpinionReel and features nine films selected by a panel of Globe Editorial Board members and film journalists. These films were chosen from more than 50 films submitted online by New England-based documentary filmmakers.

“We’re proud to add Opinion Reel to our growing selection of digital offerings,” said Ellen Clegg, Editorial Page Editor, The Boston Globe. “Globe Opinion is host to New England’s broadest conversation, and we think these films represent fresh voices, great talent, and strong viewpoints.”

Introduced in May 2015 by the Boston Globe’s Opinion section, Opinion Reel is open to professional, amateur, and student documentary filmmakers who live or went to school in New England. More than 50 films were submitted via an online form since its debut. Each film was viewed by a panel of opinion journalists, and finalists were screened in front of a broader panel of Editorial Board members and journalists with an expertise in film. This panel selected nine films to make up the Fall 2015 season.
The nine selected films range in length from 2 to 7 minutes and include works by high school students, college students, and adult professionals. Their subjects range broadly from bicycle safety in Boston to the experiences of adopted youth, from the joy and pain of moped riding to the meaning of a Chinatown tradition. Together, they tell stories of family, safety, health, community, and identity.

The full season of the inaugural Opinion Reel is available on its website www.bostonglobe.com/OpinionReel. Each week, the page will highlight a new film and introduce its filmmaker.

In addition, three of the short films will be screened before feature presentations at the upcoming Globe Docs film festival, a part of HUBweek. These films – “Jordan,” “Three Unsafe Crossings,” and “I Do Not Know Yet” – will screen on Saturday, October 10 in the Bright Family Screening Room in the Paramount Theater in Boston. Opinion Reel films will appear before the Shorts Program and the feature films “Containment” and “The State of Marriage.”

The fall 2015 Opinion Reel Film Lineup features:

  • Week 1: “Jordan”
  • Week 2: “Three Unsafe Crossings”
  • Week 3: “I Do Not Know Yet”
  • Week 4: “Southie Means Family”
  • Week 5: “Roger’s Story”
  • Week 6: “Two-Stroked: A Love Story”
  • Week 7: “Our Many Voices”
  • Week 8: “Gund Kwok Lion Dancing”
  • Week 9: “Outside the Window”

Submissions are still open for future Opinion Reel seasons. To enter, filmmakers can upload their short documentaries to YouTube or Vimeo and submit the links via a form at www.bostonglobe.com/OpinionReel. A Winter 2016 season will include new films and some selections from the original set of submissions.
