Boston, MA – The Boston Globe announced the creation of “The Globies Presented by Mercedes-Benz,” a first-of-its-kind sports awards celebration that will honor the best of the New England sports scene on and off the field. The inaugural event will take place on October 6 at the House of Blues Boston. Mercedes-Benz is the event’s principal partner, while MGM Springfield will serve as a presenting sponsor.

The Globies will be judged and presented by the Boston Globe Sports Department, recognizing athletes, teams, executives and influencers in a variety of categories. Fans will also have an opportunity to help choose winners by voting in select categories. The Globies will present awards in categories including The Boston Pride Award, Fan Favorite, Best Moment, Community Hero, Top College Athlete and more.

“New England has one of the world’s most passionate sports fan bases and we want to create a new tradition to celebrate the teams and individuals that fuel our passion while forging a stronger connection with those fans,” said Mike Sheehan, CEO Boston Globe. “We’re excited about the opportunity to collaborate with our editorial team and our readers to identify the most worthy recipients of The Globies awards and bring together fans and athletes for a world-class celebration of our dynamic sports community. We are grateful to our principal partner, the Boston Area Mercedes-Benz Dealers, for leading the efforts to make this vision a reality, as well as our presenting sponsor MGM Springfield, a company with deep roots in sports and entertainment.”

The Globies Presented by Mercedes-Benz, which will be co-produced by Fenway Sports Management, will gather some of New England’s best and brightest athletes, coaches and executives for an unforgettable evening with fans. The event at House of Blues Boston will feature red carpet arrivals and a VIP cocktail party followed by an award ceremony and celebration.

“Sports are so tightly woven into New England’s cultural fabric and our coverage aims to be at the pulse of the athletes and competitions that drive our readers’ passion,” said Joe Sullivan, Sports Editor Boston Globe. “We want to establish The Globies as the premier celebration of the athletes and teams that make New England the best sports region in the country and the world.”

The Globies will be a part of HUBweek, a week long gathering to celebrate the big ideas and bold solutions that emerge from the people, openness, and intellectual energy found in Greater Boston.
