Awarded by the Boston Globe, second annual celebration of New England sports will
recognize the athletes, teams and individuals that enrich the sports scene and inspire fans

Boston, MA – New England’s premier sports awards celebration is back for its second year as the Boston Globe announced that The Globies Presented by Mercedes-Benz will take place on November 14 at House of Blues Boston. The Globies will honor the best of the region’s sports scene on and off the field. The Globies are judged and presented by the Boston Globe Sports Department, recognizing athletes, teams and individuals in a variety of categories. Fans will once again have an opportunity to help choose winners by voting in select categories.

The inaugural Globies brought together many of New England’s most prominent athletes and passionate fans to celebrate the area’s vibrant sports culture and featured many memorable moments. Highlights included former Boston University hockey player Travis Roy’s inspirational keynote speech, Ice Bucket Challenge co-founder Pete Frates receiving the Community Hero Award, the family of late Boston mayor Thomas M. Menino accepting the Boston Pride Award, and many current and former sports stars in attendance to meet fans including David Ortiz, Rob Gronkowski, Patrice Bergeron and Ray Bourque.

“Building off the success of last year’s inaugural event, The Globies will continue to be the premier celebration of sports in New England,” said Mike Sheehan, CEO Boston Globe. “Sport connects us in profound ways and The Globies commemorates the bond created between athletes, teams and fans. We would also like to thank the Boston Area Mercedes-Benz Dealers for returning as the event’s presenting sponsor for a second year.”

The Globies will present awards in various categories including team MVPs, Best Moment, Best Female Athlete, Community Hero, and The Boston Pride Award. Fans will be able to vote for their favorite nominees and help choose winners in select categories at BostonGlobe.com/Globies.

Co-produced by Fenway Sports Management, The Globies will feature red carpet arrivals and a VIP cocktail party followed by an award ceremony and celebration. Along with Mercedes-Benz as the presenting partner, MGM Springfield returns as a sponsor of The Globies. Athletes expected to be in attendance include NESN broadcaster and former Red Sox 2nd baseman Jerry Remy, former Patriots wide receiver Troy Brown and former Revolution forward Taylor Twellman.

NESN, the official home of the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins, will serve as the broadcast partner of The Globies. For the second consecutive year, NESN will produce a special highlight show to air in the days following the event. NESN’s host of Red Sox baseball Tom Caron (@TomCaron) will serve as the event’s emcee.

“Sports fans in New England are proud of their championship teams and love to celebrate their sports heroes,” said Sean McGrail, NESN President and CEO. “The Globies captures that fan passion and has a natural home on NESN. We’re thrilled to be a part of this exciting must-see annual event.”
